HABLA 2010 Scholarship Winner
Angela Parra
Angela Parra is a first year student at Georgia Perimeter College. She started her journey at GPC this fall as a pre-dental hygiene major, with a 3.7 high school GPA and over a hundred hours of community service. She graduated with honors from Duluth High School where she served as the secretary of the school’s JUNTOS Latino Club, a student-led organization for Latino students. During her time at Duluth High School, Angela played a vital role in organizing a leadership conference, college fair and bilingual tutoring programs in and out of school. She launched the club’s first ever website that provides information for Latino students and their families. Her high school counselor describes Angela as “an innovative thinker, a tireless worker, and an outstanding leader who is truly a superb example of a student leader.”
Angela’s family moved to the United States from her native Colombia when she was seven years old. She proudly declares that she gains her strong will to succeed from watching her parents work diligently to support their family. That’s why upon achieving her dream of becoming a dental hygienist, Angela plans to use her career as a means to effect change in her community. She plans to pay forward to other children, the invaluable gift she has received from being a “Little” in the Big Brother, Big Sister program. Angela’s enthusiasm is evident in her excitement about being accepted at GPC and receiving the HABLA Scholarship, “to begin to build the footsteps of [her] American dream.”
