Dr. Carla Haack

A third-year surgical resident at Emory University, Dr. Carla Haack starts her days at 5 a.m. and works up to eighty hours a week at Grady Health System, but says she lives for the time she spends in the operating room. Born into a German-American and Puerto Rican family in Atlanta in 1983, she attended the Atlanta International School before moving to Puerto Rico at age 10. Home-schooled during her first few years in Puerto Rico, she entered a mainstream school for the tenth grade and finished high school at fifteen. After graduation she went on to attend the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey and at nineteen was accepted into the university’s school of medicine. Finishing medical school at twenty-three, Haack decided to return to her birthplace to complete a surgical residency at Emory University.
